Wow! What a great time it was yesterday at our Hands-On Mission Project. We wrapped and stuffed a total of 88 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child! It was such an awesome sight to see moms, dads, grandparents, siblings, and kids coming together for one common purpose of serving the Lord by serving others! We looked at the scripture passage from Matthew 25:31-46, when Jesus tells us that whatever we do to those who are ignored and overlooked is ultimately what we do to Him.
As I said we completed 88 boxes and had 80 people there, so it was a GREAT time! Thanks to those of you who donated shoeboxes or supplies and to those of you who came.
Next Hands-On Mission will be Sunday, November 15th at 4:00 pm.

Wow! It was a great weekend for FBC Children’s Ministry!
What an exciting time it was between our Children’s Disciple-Now and Children’s Day!
We had a great time Friday and Saturday with 70 kids, 16 college students, 8 host home, and countless volunteers with our Disciple-Now. The weekend was filled with small group Bible study, recreation, worship, missions, and a lot more fun!
On Sunday, we all came together 1st - 5th graders for breakfast, a time of celebration with song and bible study, and worship! It was a great day to celebrate the Children’s Ministry and the adult volunteers who make ministry happen!
God is doing incredible things through our children and what a blessing it is to be apart!
Our Children’s Disciple-Now is only a few days away and we couldn’t be more excited about it!
We’re asking you to join us in prayer as the weekend approaches and then plays out. We have 70 3rd - 5th graders, 17 college leaders, and 9 host homes that will be apart of our weekend.
Here are some specific areas of prayer:
1. Weather
2. Safety & NO sickness
3. The hearts of our kids
4. Our worship band & speaker
5. Our mission project
6. The college leaders
7. Small Group Sessions
8. Host Home Families
9. For “God-sized” things to happen in the hearts of those involved!
We’re excited about a great weekend!
Our Children’s Disciple-Now is quickly approaching!!

We are aware of the decision by RCSD to make Thursday, May 21 a full day of school and Friday, May 22 a half day for the 2009 school year. And, yes we are aware those dates lead into Kids Kamp.
Kids Kamp ‘09 will still be May 21 - May 23, 2009. We have no other dates to choose from with Twin Lakes campground. So, our schedule and camp will stay the same!
We will meet at 3:00 pm and leave at 3:30 pm on Thursday, May 21st for Kids Kamp. And, camp will run through late Saturday afternoon.
We hope that you understand and that this will not keep your child from joining us for a great 2009 Kids Kamp!
Please help us as we try to spread the word to parents and kids! Also, if you have any questions please contact our Children’s Ministry office (601-825-8003).

Now that we have begun our new security check-in/out procedure, all parents who have babies - 5th graders should have corresponding security numbers with their child. Therefore, we can now alert you if there is a need with your child while you are in worship. If you see your security number flash on the worship screens, please come directly to your child’s classroom. Thanks to all our parents for their cooperation with our new security check-in process!!
We will be taking a new step of security in our Children & Preschool areas beginning Sunday, November 16th!
We will continue to provide “security beepers” for infants through 2 year olds at check-in. But, we will now be putting a simple yet efficient security measure into effect with our 3 year olds through 5th grade.
All children & preschoolers must be dropped off by a parent / guardian to their assigned room/area!!
When the child is signed in at their room/area the child will be given a sticker with their name and a number on it. The parent/guardian will be given the sticker stub that also has the child’s name and matching number on it. For the child to be released the person picking up the child must show the sticker stub given at check in.
We will have a brief discussion time along with Q&A time for all preschool and children parents on Sunday, November 9th after the evening 6 pm worship service in room 114 (by Main Street).
Thank you for helping us keep your children safe!!

There was great anticipation as 38 kids jumped on the bus this past Saturday, going to “destination unknown”!!! These children had no idea where they were going, only to show up at the church ready for FUN! This trip was a reward for all those that learned their 6 Bible verses these past six weeks. And guess where we went! We went BOWLING! The children had a blast. We bowled (Mrs. Christy & Miss Melissa included) and had a great time laughing and being together. (Christy bowled a 124, but whose keeping score, Ha! Ha!)
Over the next 6 weeks in lifeGroups/Sunday School we are emphasizing bringing your Bibles to church. We want to see our children bringing their Bibles and opening God’s Word to read and study it each week. So encourage your children each week to grab their Bibles as you head out the door on Sunday mornings!!
For the past 6 weeks we have been encouraging our children on the importance of memorizing scripture. With the help of parents and dedicated Sunday School teachers, we had 79 students memorize 6 scripture verses. We are so proud of those who accomplished this task. Congratulations!

To commemorate the beginning of a new year in lifeGROUPs the children’s ministry went outside for a balloon launch. The balloon launch correlated with a talk we had about Isaiah 40:31 where God tells us to soar like eagles and we talked about how we are going to soar this year in our classes by memorizing scripture. Those that memorize their scripture verses will be taken on a Mystery Trip at the end of 6 weeks. We let the balloons go and we all screamed “SOARIN’ LIKE EAGLES!” It was so much fun!!!

Oh man! i wish you all could have watched the homeless people as they looked through all of the jackets and warm stuff you sent to the ministry at Southside Baptist Church in Jackson. It was so much fun as they picked out the warm coats, gloves, socks that you all sent. And what an awesome way to demonstrate your love of Jesus on Christmas Day. Mostly the group was made up of men but there were a few women also. The children’s coats and all other extras will be stored in the ongoing clothing ministry at Southside and many families will be “shopping” in the weeks ahead.
I am proud of you, kids and your families and the ways you all learning to give...isn’t it fun?
Mrs. Beth
PS Next year, ask your Mom and Dad if your whole family can go with us to help serve the Christmas dinner and give out the jackets to the homeless. It will be the best Chrismas you have ever had!

As you are getting ready to attend one of the Christmas Eve Vespers Services, please remember to bring a jacket, gloves, scarf or blanket for the homeless. I think this ministry project will be the most important one I have ever done with our church families. How special to think that as the children are getting ready to celebrate the birth of our Savior, they can minister and help those who are cold and most needy during this season. What a great chance for them to sacrifice and give in the name of Jesus! All sizes of warm outer wear is needed, and adult sized jackets and coats are especially helpful. The services will be held at our West Campus/Boyce Thompson Drive at 4 and at 6 pm.
I pass by the sign at Crossgates Methodist Church that says, Thanks___________ for five wonderful years. I want to put that sign in my front yard and write on it, Thanks First Baptist Church for ten wonderful years! What an amazing time this has been for me and my family. Who would think that a small town girl like me with no obvious talents (except for that whole star spangeled banner song thing on that piano) would ever be used by God in such a way? I am so thankful for a church family who loves me despite on all my faults and believes in the God who has called me to serve Him. Thanks for letting me have a small part in leading your children to the Savior...if you will put up with me, I want to stay for ten more years. We have lots more to do for the Lord on this side of Heaven. by the way, I have a list...who needs a job?
I love you, church family! Beth
Here we go again, only this year instead of our usual three floats in the Brandon Christmas Parade, we will have five of the “candy throwing, hay sitting, oopps! I gotta go to the bathroom, Oh Look, there’s my friend, I am freezing” Floats in the parade on Friday, December 7th. I am excited because it gives every child a chance to shine..not based on looks, talents or popularity but based on the Grace and Goodness of God. Every child is a star on these floats.
Parents, we would love to have your help! We need chaperones and decorators and bathroom takers and Lineruppers. Email me at be sure to bring your own tootsie rolls to throw. You aren’t getting mine.
Thanks so much to Steve Hamilton and all of the SS Classes, John Wayne Blough and his horses, our registration people, our staff..we had an awesome time! We had 56 families that we didn’t know to attend (thanks for coming) and around 300 of FBC folks. You know the two things, I love about this--the candy and the fun pretending to be anything we would like to be. Isn’t that neat how we can have fun and make those memories at church with our church family? And although I will never be as witty at Lucille Ball was, I love being her for a little while.
The bigger picture is that our children can dream...and for one night they be the American idol champion, the beauty pageant wineer or or climb tall buildings in a single bound. Reminds me of the freedom we have in
Christ...the old has gone, the new has come. We can do great things with His courage, His power and His strength. We are truly free in Him. There’s nothing in this world that can match the Holy spirit and His gifts in our life.
gotta run, there’s a tiara that’s calling my name.
Don’t miss your opportunity to sign up for Upward Soccer.
Registration is November 26-end of December…
Same fun and fairness as Upward Basketball.
For more info or to volunteer, contact Mark at
Don’t forget this Sunday we begin everything for our grade schoolers at the West Campus Garage ARea (second floor youth room). We have a band coming (DaveO and the MC Magic), Aweseome speaker...Melissa May, giant slide, obstable course and other inflatables, pizza and Bops’s Ice Cream. Wow!
It begins at 10 am. Adults and preschoolers will be at the East Campus (College Street). Students will be with us at the West Campus/Boyce Thompson.
Don’t miss the fun! Remember to bring a bag of individually wrapped candy for our Trunk and Treat next weekend!
Many of our classes completed the homework during SS last week. Check with your child to see if they have completed it. This one is really fun! Bring it on Sunday to shop at Mrs. Debbie’s Candy Store!
How are our tithes and offerings used for at the church
Guess how much the electric bill was this past month?
_______________
Guess how much our church spends each month on postage to mail information to church members
Guess the amount that our church gives to missionaries in foreign countries (through the Foreign Mission Board)
Guess how much the church spent this year on Vacation Bible School?______________________
How much do you think our church gave away to help poor people here in Brandon?_________________________
What do you think it costs for our church to buy Sunday School books for everyone in the church each month?_____________
Bonus Question: How much did we spend this month on toilet paper?________________
Parents, your child was challenged this week to bring a favorite, awesome, special toy to give away to the inner city ministry of FBC Jackson’s afterschool program. We are asking them not to bring their “leftovers” things that don’t work, or that are old, but something that they still like to play with. The larger picture is that our children grasp the concept that God deserves our very best..the best of our energy, the best of our time, the best of our efforts and if you are in grade school....the best of our toys. The little boy and his lunch was our Bible lesson this week..how awesome to know that the creator of our world puts that much value in children...to use his small gift to bless 5,000. God still wants the same from our children today...their very best so He can bless many others.
Hold your breath and count to five as they pick out something to bring...let them be as generous as they want to and remember....God is going to bless many others through your child!
September 30 (this week) your child should bring back the My Stuff worksheet-we are learning how God is the owner of all of our “stuff” and we just manage it for Him. We will have large group again at the beginning of both Sunday School hours.
This Sunday their homework is to bring back one of their favorite toys that they play with to give away to a less fortunate child. We will be talking this Sunday about the little boy and his lunch...he gave Jesus the best he had to offer. We need to give to the Lord, our best, too..not just our leftover stuff we don’t want anymore. That’s a tough lesson for us adults, too. All of these things will be going to Mission First, the innercity ministry of FBC Jackson. They have an awesome afterschool ministry.
Wear comfortable clothes and be ready to have an awesome time!
If you didn’t get your homework, just fill out a piece of paper with My Stuff at the top and write down five of your toys that you own and how often you use them. See you on Main Street on Sunday!
Mrs. Beth
I love Upward Basketball..not just because one of two favorite boys in the world will be playing, not just because my husband will be leading and directing it, but because values every child who plays the game or who comes to cheer. I struggle watching children get left on the sidelines at younger and younger ages. I was told when Graham was four that he would be behind in soccer because I wouldn’t sign him up. Behind? In Soccer? or in any sport...at age four? Graham was doing what every four year old needed to do..playing all of the soccer he wanted to in the backyard. He was the winning goalie, the best defense and in his innocent mind, the best all around athelete God ever sent to this earth. He went on to play soccer later on an organized team but I wouldn’t trade $65, fourteen saturday mornings with the neighborhood kids, Daily Maid donuts from Larry Poole and family memories for what any sport could have taught my child as a four year old.
But four year olds grow up and so do the pressures that come with it.
Let me give you a contrast with the Upward program… The most awesome thing about Upward is that every child gets to play...every child receives the same amount of playing time (assuming they are at the games) and at the end of each game, every child is a winner. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a competitive league and the children are taught basic fundamentals and progressive skills and drills. The difference is, the goal for Upward is for every child to emerge a better basketball player and more importantly, knowing more about Jesus and His plan for them. What a concept...that the game belongs to the children and they become winners, no matter what the scoreboard says at the end.
Check out our Upward program by calling 601-825-6766 by September 27th and come and watch your child fall in love with the game of basketball...just be sure to stop by and get some do-nuts on the way home.
What a precious time last Sunday for our first graders getting their Bibles. Do you know when they will get their next Bibles on that stage? It hit me when I was calling out the name of a child on Sunday night that they next time their name is called....it will be for their High School Graduation Bible. wow...the significance of that floored me. Are we doing all we can and should to train them to love the Lord? Are we equipping parents and families to grow spiritually? Are we using every moment available to us to teach the importance of God’s word and its truth for their lives?
Oh, I hope so but I am afraid I fail sometimes. I want to be selfish this year...yes, selfish. I want every moment of our children’s ministry to be not only exciting and fun and kid friendly but purposeful. I want what we do on Sunday mornings to eternally change their lives and daily change their actions. I want us to be so in God’s word that the overflow of His Truths spill out to our kids. Will you pray for our children’s ministry team-for our lives to line up consistently with God’s word and our teaching to be lifechanging....that is my hope and prayer for this Sunday School year.
Sorry we can’t upload pics to our website but we do have them for you on snapfish.

We have discovered the most amazing people ministering here in Kona. Tullos and Libby Jones (both from Mississippi) serve here at Kona Baptist church and their heart for the people and their desire to serve them is tremendous. The church is made up of all different kinds of people-native Hawaiians, Chinese, Hispanics, Brazilians and lots of retired couples from the mainland. A team from MS has been helping with the Vacation Bible School for the past few years but Tullos and Libby are determined that their church will lead this VBS next year without outside help. So we are equippping and encouraging and being the second string and getting them ready to serve without us next year.
Pray for the children who are attending vbs that they will hear clearly the Good News that Jesus is Lord and respond to His love and plan for them.
Aloha!
Beth
When someone says mission trip, I don’t immediately think of surf, sand, and shrimp, I think more of…
exhausting hours
extremely tired muscles and
extra responsibilities that we didn’t plan on.
That’s before I discovered Hawaii as the place to serve
All kidding aside, the Big Island, or Kona, has tremendous spiritual needs and today we will attempt to meet some of
those needs by introducing Jesus to the children who will attend Kona Baptist Church’s VBS.
Amazing to me that a girl from Ethel, with relatively little known skills (except for the dynamic cup game I can do) would be used
by the Lord to teach others about Him. I am overwhelmed...and He is allowing me to do that in Hawaii, of all places!
I will write more tomorrow! Pray for the 19 5th-6th graders we are expecting today!
Beth
(the girl with sand between her toes and a grateful smile on her face)
Here are a few of the (1,500) pictures that we have taken! Enjoy! We should have our photo website up and going soon!

Yvonne and Anita need one classroom director...anyone interested???
Beth
Wow...you cannot imagine how thankful I am for all of the hard work on the part of the counselors and staff during kids kamp. The children didn’t have a free minute..they were swimming, climbing, eating, laughing and a little bit of sleeping. Thanks so much for all of the hard work on the part of our behind the scenes crew. Whenever the counselor and campers arrived for each activity, everything was so organized and prepared. Team you were amazing! I hope to get the pictures posted on a kodak website soon. Even as I write this, Mr. Andy and Mrs. gloria are preparing the powerpoint and the video for tomorrow morning for our Celebration time at 9:45 and our worshipping together at 11:00 am. Talk about some workers!
Team, we will be sending out the annual evaluation so that we can get your feedback. Remember if you turn in your evaluation on time, you will get a Kids kamp DVD and a picture CD! Look for the evaluation in the mail this week. I love and appreciate each of you!
Hey is this up and going? I hope so...more info to come!
Wow...I think we have a children’s ministry blog. I hope to post a pic on here soon.
Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Bridges for hosting our fishing party this weekend and to the children’s day team for planning such an awesome time for our kids! Joe Turner really rocked on Sunday night. Thanks to all of you who helped or attended… God is good!
